  Titanium Backup for Android is an amazing piece of software and a crucial part of the process if you're planning to install a custom ROM on your phone. Use these simple instructions to create a backup and restore from it after you install your ROM of choice.
• Samsung Galaxy S: Full Update Guide – CyanogenMod Wiki
  I just ROM'd my SGS to CM7 using these instructions, line by line. Prior to this I backed everything up using Titanium Backup Pro and so I was able to restore all my apps and settings in no time flat afterwards. Note that your phone must already be rooted prior to doing any of this. Note also that Rooting or ROMming your phone will almost certainly void your warranty.
